The joys of waking up listening to Farming Today are numerous. They have included for most of the last year endless discussions about badgers, TB and logic of culling to protect cattle.

(The short answer appears to be that culling probably won't do that much but they'll probably do it anyway...)

The other week I was half-awake and listening to an interview with, I think, a Chief Vet either government or more likely Head the Royal College of Vets, who was commenting on the rise in reports of what can only be described as evidence found by Vets of improper contact with farm animals. I woke up fairly rapidly!

Today's gem was in a piece based on the report that BASF are applying for a licence to grow GM potatoes. There was a discussion, albeit two statements of opposed positions rather than dialogue, between the BASF representative and a representative from Friends of the Earth.

One of the issues at stake was that FoE are concerned by the possibility of cross-contamination with normal potato stocks, and this may happen because not all potatoes are collected from the ground during harvesting (and being left in the soil can self-seed the next season). Apparently the technical term for these left-behind spuds is 'Volunteer'.

How cool is the English Language?!
